two people were archery hunting

Two local men who shot a deer and then claimed it was a coyote have been fined a total of $10,000.
Gordon Thompson, 52, and James Burrows, 47, were convicted of hunting white-tailed deer during the closed season, and giving a false statement. As well as the fine, both of their hunting licences have been suspended for two years.
Court heard that on December 27, 2003, two people were archery hunting for deer in Prince Edward County when Thompson and Burrows arrived, claiming they were hunting coyotes. Both had high-powered rifles and shot at and wounded a white-tailed deer close to an archery hunter. There is no open season for deer with rifles in Prince Edward County.
During the investigation by Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) conservation officers and Ontario Provincial Police, Thompson and Burrows said they shot at a coyote. Hair and blood samples, plus evidence from an archery hunter, proved otherwise.
Justice of the Peace Donna Doelman heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on May 20, 2005
