Rifle/trap leagues - Frazier-Simplex is threatening to run away with the Pittsburgh and Suburban Rifle League title, but there’s a real race on for second place. Murrysville and Dormont-Mt. Lebanon are tied with 6-3 records after last week’s action. Murrysville lost to Frazier-Simplex 1484-1475, while Dormont-Mt. Lebanon scored a 1482-1444 victory over Allegheny (3-5). Clymer, meanwhile, improved to 4-5 with a 1441-1361 win over Irwin Post 228 (0-8). Green Valley (2-6) had the bye. John Husk of Frazier-Simplex (9-0) had the week’s high score with a 299. Teammates Dave Cramer and Tom Santelli were the high senior and high junior, respectively, with scores of 297 and 296. Liz Leckie was high lady with a 293.
Kiski (6-5) made a good run but came up short, 1188-1182, against unbeaten Murrysville (11-0) in the A-team standings in the Allegheny Valley Rifle League last week. Kittanning, meanwhile, improved to 9-2 with an 1180-1164 win over Crowfoot (3-8), and Fort Hand (3-8) scored a 1155-1149 victory over Tarentum (1-10). In the B-team standings, Murrysville is on top at 11-0, followed by Kiski (7-4), Kittanning (6-5), Crowfoot (4-7), Fort Hand (4-7), and Tarentum (1-10). Jim Spelock Jr. of Kiski fired a perfect 300 to record the week’s top score. Bob King of Kiski was the high senior with 293, and Aimee Gawne was top female and top junior with a 284.

Gov. Ed Rendell will be at the Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsmen’s Club on Friday to sign House Bill 1690, which formally allows the Pennsylvania Game Commission to create a mentored youth hunting program. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. with remarks by Robert Miller, the Rendell’s advisor for hunting, fish and conservation. Anyone interested in attending is welcome, but everyone should plan to be in the hall no later than 11:30 a.m.
Chris Rosenberry, supervisor of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s deer management section, and Jerry Feaser, the agency’s press secretary, will appear on Pennsylvania Cable Network’s “PCN Call-In” program at 7 p.m. Thursday. Viewers can call in questions to PCN toll-free at 1-877-726-5001.
South Buffalo Township Sportsmen’s Club is sponsoring its third annual “Deer Horn” event from 1 to 5 p.m. Feb. 4 at the club, which is located near Freeport. A meeting to form a National Wild Turkey Federation chapter in the Delmont area will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Salem Lutheran Church in Delmont. Tickets are available for the annual banquet held by Forbes Trail Chapter of Trout Unlimited. It will be held March 4 at the American Legion in Latrobe. Tickets are $25 and include dinner. Shoots on tap
Connellsville Sportsmen’s Club will stage a turkey shoot beginning at 11 a.m. Jan. 29. The skeet and/or trap field will be used for this event. Shooters will have the option of shooting ten targets at skeet or trap. Skeet targets will be five doubles, and trap targets will be two targets from each position. Two turkeys will be awarded for each 10-shooter round. Winners will be determined by the high gun and a random score for each round. The club also holds skeet shooting year-round from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays, while trap practice Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. beginning Feb. 5. All are welcome.
Fairbank Rod and Gun Club will hold a “chukar mania” hunt beginning at 7 a.m. Feb. 4. Each two-man team will be provided with 12 shells and be given 30 minutes to hunt for six birds. Only one dog will be allowed per team, and each will be accompanied by a judge. Cost is $75 per team. Call Robert Valente at 724-246-9828.
Pony Farm Sportsman Club will hold an archery shoot Jan. 29, with registration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be an indoor hunters flint round featuring 60 shots at 10, 20 and 30 yards at animal or target faces. The fifth annual Pitt-Bradford Panther Baseball Sporting Clays Classic will take place Saturday at the Bradford Gun Club. Registration for the 100-bird shoot will be from 10 a.m. to noon, with shooting starting at 10:30 a.m. There will be prizes in Lewis Class A-D, and to the ladies, junior, veteran (60 and older) and high overall champions. The event will also feature a lunch, raffles and other door prizes. Cost is $45 if postmarked by Wednesday or $50 at the door. The Strictly Sticks Traditional Archers will conduct a traditional equipment 3-D shoot Feb. 19 at East Huntingdon Sportsmen’s Association in Alverton.
