Michigan To Post Turkey Drawing Results

The Department of Natural Resources announced today that the results of the 2006 spring turkey license drawing will be posted on the DNR Web site beginning March 1. Drawing results from the Jan. 1-Feb. 1 lottery and leftover license information will be available at www.michigan.gov/dnr. Applicants who did not apply online will receive a notification postcard.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern on March 8, unsuccessful spring turkey applicants may purchase one leftover license in person on a first-come, first-served basis from any authorized Michigan hunting license agent. After the lottery drawing was completed, more than 47,000 leftover limited-quota licenses are available.

The Natural Resources Commission and the DNR will be discussing a new option for issuing leftover spring turkey licenses that would make the spring season consistent with procedures for the fall turkey season. Currently, only those who are in the lottery drawing are eligible to purchase a leftover license. The new option would allow the DNR to issue leftover quota licenses for the spring turkey season to individuals who did not participate in the lottery drawing. This new option will be discussed at the March 9 NRC meeting in Alpena.

This year, approximately 138,000 hunters applied for or purchased a license for the spring turkey hunting season that runs from April 17 through May 31, with various hunting periods ranging in length from seven to 31 days. There are approximately 46,305 square miles open for the 2006 spring season.

Spring turkey hunting management units, quotas and seasons are evaluated annually to assure local goals are being met as recommended by the DNR wildlife management unit supervisors. These goals incorporate the social and biological carrying capacity of the turkey management units. License quotas are developed to meet the management goal. As a result, a total of 114,190 licenses (46,690 general and 67,500 private land) were made available through a lottery drawing for the hunter-limited hunt periods.

Hunters who are unable to determine their drawing information by March 7 should call the DNR at 517-373-3904 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. for assistance.

A person may purchase only one license for the spring wild turkey hunting season.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state’s natural resources for current and future generations.
