Local turkey callers gobble up Fair honors

DES MOINES, IA - Eastern Iowans began earning ribbons at the kickoff of the Iowa State Fair on Thursday morning, with Cole Williams, 10, of Columbus Junction, taking fourth place in the turkey calling contest.

He performed a gobble and purr, which he perfected for his hunting exhibitions.”I’ve been hunting since I was four, going with my dad. Last year I started carrying a gun,” Cole said. “Last year, a neighbor and I got into the blind at 5:30 in the morning and three hours later saw a turkey in a tree. A couple of hours later, the turkey came down, and we blasted him.”

Entering the turkey calling contest is a tradition for the Creery family from Hawkeye, a town near West Union in northeast Iowa.

Mark Creery competed in the adult class, and his children, Madison, 10, Zachary, 12, and Tanner, 14, gobbled and purred in the junior class. Zachary placed second for the second consecutive year.

“We thought it would be fun when we saw it the first year we came here. This is our fourth year. We don’t compete in anything else,” said Mark, 44. His calls earned third place.
