Hunting seasons are picking up
October 23rd, 2005 by Administrator
Hunting seasons are picking up steam - The third weekend of pheasant season is here as the month shoots on past. Only two weeks remain before the North Dakota deer gun opener.
The local ducks seem to have had enough of our weather and have moved south. Lots of mallards remain in Canada with the bulk of the geese. The big lakes and nice weather just north of the border keeps the waterfowl quite happy, so the only thing we can hope for is some ‘fowl’ weather up that way to move them slowly through here.
Some local hunters have made the trip to Canada already this year and have done great on the ducks and geese.
Tobin is also drawing some of our sportsmen north for the big walleyes, and reports indicate the fishing to be fair but not quite as good as usual because of higher water levels being released into the river. I have heard of at least one walleye over 13 this month. Keep us informed if you head north.
Some of our local hunters also have gone way north to Alaska for moose and we have seen some huge moose racks brought in. Jeff Moe brought by a 67-inch bull and Larry Schultz, who was up at about the same time as Jeff, scored on a 63-inch bull. Both of these hunters have already harvested monsters bulls and must really enjoy packing these huge creatures out of the bush.
God bless them, I get tired out carrying a coon!
Cleaner dirty water
The dirty water in the river did have some effect on the Outlaw Derby results but the guys still did great.
We should see cleaner water now and fishing should keep improving.
A few boats did travel down to the lake this past weekend and we had good reports again all the way south of Four Bears and even stories of big walleye in Van Hook.
Fall is busy but the nice afternoons should be spent fishing.
Bow bucks
We have had a terrific year for the bowhunters and a few have already been brought in for display.
We have Steve Olson’s buck which was harvested in Montana and Ryan Larmer’s North Dakota 9 X 5 as well. Both of these are huge bucks. Wes Slade has also mentioned he will drop his by and we are looking forward to seeing Darcy Aberle’s buck as well.
Any one of these bucks would have been the top buck of the year for almost any of the last 10 years of bow harvested bucks.
One monster from the past that I would like to see again though is Rod Fretland’s deer from the Fairview bottoms that was an archery winner.
It was a heavy monster that looked like it came from the Canadian bush.
