Fargo deer hunting season want more timeAssociated PressFARGO, N.D. - Residents who oppose a deer hunting season along the Red River have not had enough time to make their views known, city commissioners were told.

Resident Maureen Davies told commissioners Monday that many who live in the north Fargo area along the river spend their winters in the South and have been unaware that city leaders are moving ahead with a deer bowhunting season within city limits.
Commissioners approved a first reading of the hunting ordinance Monday.

At their last meeting, they passed a resolution asking Gov. John Hoeven to include designated areas along the Red River in Fargo in the state’s 2006 deer-hunting proclamation. That would allow hunting in those areas during the bowhunting season from Sept. 1 to Jan. 7.

Davies asked commissioners Monday to delay action on the ordinance and asked them to schedule a neighborhood meeting in May, when the snowbirds have returned.
“A few deer killed this fall is not going to make a difference,” she said. “I think we need to study it more.”

Mayor Bruce Furness disagreed with Davies’ statement that “most” people oppose the hunting season. He said most of the complaints he received are from people who want the deer population controlled.

Even if the ordinance is approved, commissioners still must pass a resolution to set the hunting season, which will allow more time for comment, Commissioner Mike Williams said.
