Fall archery season for turkey begins Oct. 8; Junior deer hunters get day Oct. 22
AUGUSTA (Oct 6): There will be a fall archery season for turkey in Wildlife Management Districts 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26, from Saturday, Oct. 8, through Saturday, Oct. 22. Last year, archers tagged 204 turkeys during the fall season.
Anyone who possesses an archery license may purchase a wild turkey hunting permit from a license agent to hunt turkey during the fall wild turkey season. People may also purchase permits online at mefishwildlife.com. Permit fees are $13 for Maine residents, and $43 for nonresidents and aliens.
The bag limit is one wild turkey of either sex. Only bow and arrow may be used during the fall turkey season, and the legal hunting time is from 1⁄2 hour before sunrise until 1⁄2 hour after sunset.
Junior deer hunters get day Oct. 22
Junior hunters get their own day for deer hunting Saturday, Oct. 22. Last year, 599 young hunters were successful.
Hunters ages 10-15 who possess a junior hunting license (either resident or nonresident) can hunt deer on this day if they are under the direct supervision of a parent, guardian or a qualified adult. A qualified adult is a person at least 18 years of age, approved by that youth hunter’s parent or guardian. This person must hold a valid Maine hunting license or have successfully completed a hunter safety course. The accompanying adult cannot possess a firearm.
The junior hunter on this day can take one deer of either sex, by firearm or by bow and arrow, anywhere in the state that is open to hunting. An any-deer permit is not needed to take a female deer on this day. If the youth hunter tags a deer, they still may hunt other deer seasons if they possess a bonus deer permit or hunt with a bow and arrow in an expanded archery zone.
