Hunters will have to register deer dogs
Hunters planning to use dogs to trail deer this hunting season are reminded they must register their dogs in advance of the season. Also, those taking part in the upcoming deer-dog training season must register their animals.
The special training season offered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission runs from Oct. 1-20 in the state’s central and south zones. In the northwest zone, training is allowed from Oct. 29-Nov. 17.
Registrations will be issued to hunting clubs or landowners hunting deer with dogs on a selected track of land. Upon registration, the FWC will issue a number, which must be attached or affixed to collars of dogs used on registered properties. Hunters must possess copies of the registration while hunting and must keep dogs on registered properties.
Registrations are available from FWC offices or on the Web at www.myfwc.com/hunting.
Dogs for trailing deer is a hunting style popular in the South. Spring turkey permits. It’s not too early to plan for spring turkey season if you want to take part in one of the state’s special Osceola hunts.
Applications will be accepted online at www.myfwc.com, or at county tax collectors’ offices or any license agent. The application period opened last Thursday and ends Oct. 17.
