The deadline to apply for a 2006 fall turkey license is Tuesday.
Hunters may apply at any authorized license dealer and at Department of Natural Resources operation service centers throughout the state.
Hunters also may apply online at www.michigan.gov/dnr.
“Since we began offering online applications, more and more hunters are applying via the web,” said Denise Gruben, DNR customer systems manager. “They’re finding E-license to be convenient, easy and fast.” Al Stewart, DNR upland game bird specialist, said there are 14 wild turkey management units open for fall turkey hunting during the Oct. 2 through Nov. 14 fall season.
A total of 56,450 licenses are available through a lottery for the fall turkey hunting season.
“This is a great opportunity for hunters to help the DNR stabilize or reduce wild turkey numbers in certain areas of the state to meet local goals based on habitat conditions and public attitudes,” Stewart said.
During the fall season, hunters may take a bird of either sex. Last fall, 17,100 hunters harvested 4,700 birds.
Those who apply must pay a nonrefundable application fee of $4, which does not include the cost of the license.
All applicants, except those who applied online, will be mailed a postcard with their drawing results by Sept. 6. Drawing results will be posted Aug. 28 online at www.michigan.gov/dnr.
If any licenses remain after the drawing, unsuccessful applicants may purchase one leftover license in person at any license dealer on a first-come, first-served basis for a one-week period beginning Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. Any licenses remaining as of Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. will be available for purchase over the counter by individuals who did not apply for a fall wild turkey license. These licenses will be sold until the quota is met.
If hunters encounter problems with the application process, they can obtain assistance by calling (517) 373-3904 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
