Archery Trail ends with big tournament Another season for the Covington County Youth Archery Association (CCYAA) has come and gone.
Friendship 3-D hosted the fifth and final tournament of the 2005 season on Saturday, May 14. It was the end of another great season with head-to-head competition for the youth in Covington County. Each season consist of five tournaments with the final event being the CCYAA Classic. All registered archers throughout the season competed for “Shooter of the Year” awards and “Top Gun” awards as the top archer on each team.
The Shooter of the Year award goes to the archers with the best cumulative score after all of the events with the lowest score being dropped. The Top Gun awards are presented to the archer with the most points on each team at the conclusion of the season.
Teams were also recognized as first and second flight winners at each tournament.
The final tournament saw Hunter Brown of Straughn finish first in the second flight followed by Jared Armstrong of Straughn and Chris Dunbar of Opp. Second flight winners were Bob Ballard of Pleasant Home in first followed by Cole Sauls of Opp in second and Corey Brawner of Andalusia in third.
Opp finished first in the team standings with 828 followed by Andalusia (761) and Pleasant Home (748). Red Level was fourth with 745 points followed by Straughn (679) and Florala (157).
Wesley Pearce was the Shooter of the Year winner with a season-ending total of 844 points. He was presented with a cash prize of $150, a Golden Arrow trophy and a hunting trip with Ed McPherson, president of Pearson Archery. Andrew Kersey finished second with a score of 828 points. He was awarded a cash prize of $100 and a Golden Arrow trophy. Cole Sauls of Opp was third with a score of 826 points. He took home $50 and a Golden Arrow trophy.
The Top Guns from each team were Cory Brawner of Andalusia, Daniel McDougald of Florala, Wesley Pearce of Opp, Bob Ballard of Pleasant Home, Daniel Hart of Red Level and Shane Patterson of Straughn.
Novelty shoots were held immediately following the regular competition, including a running deer shoot, a speed shoot and a long-distance shoot.
Jamie Musgrove won the running deer shoot. Daniel McDougald won the speed shoot. Bob Ballard won the long shoot.
Special thanks go out to the many sponsors and volunteers throughout the community that helped make these events possible for the young archers of Covington County. Registration for the 2006 season will begin in January.
