Kentucky elk permits

Kentucky elk permits doubling to 200 this year

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will issue 200 elk permits for the 2006 hunting season, twice as many as last year.

Hunters must apply for the permits, which will be distributed by random drawing. The application deadline is July 31, and those drawn will be announced Aug. 20.

The application fee is $10. Hunters who are selected will be required to buy an elk tag, which is $25 for residents and $300 for non-residents.

Applications are available wherever licenses are sold, by phone at (877) 598-2401 or at www.fw.ky.gov.

The 2006 elk firearm season will be Oct. 7-13 for bulls in limited-entry areas and at-large zones. The firearm season for cow elk will be Dec. 9-15 in limited-entry areas and Dec. 9-22 in at-large zones.

Archery and crossbow season will be Oct. 7-Jan. 15 in at-large zones. No separate archery and crossbow season is offered in limited-entry areas.

Hunters will be randomly assigned a bull or cow tag and randomly assigned to limited-entry or at-large zones.

Limited-entry areas include selected wildlife management areas within Kentucky’s 16-county elk restoration zone. The at-large zones include all areas in the elk zone outside the limited-entry areas.

Kentucky’s elk restoration program began in 1997, and the herd is now estimated at 5,700, the largest east of the Mississippi River.
